They help develop immunity by presenting antigens that imitate an infection. There are currently vaccines that help protect us against many life-threatening diseases, including meningitis and polio. Antigens are present on all viruses and bacteria. By injecting particular antigens into the body, the immune system can safely learn to recognize them as hostile invaders, produce antibodies, and remember them for the future. • Live virus vaccines use the weakened form of the virus. • Killed (inactivated) vaccines are made from a protein or other small pieces taken from a virus or bacteria. • Toxoid vaccines contain a toxin or chemical made by the bacteria or virus. They make you immune to the harmful effects of the infection, instead of to the infection itself. • Biosynthetic vaccines contain manmade substances that are very similar to pieces of the virus or bacteria. Neutralizing antibodies bind to the virus, disabling it from attacking human body cells. Immune system remembers the virus so the body can quickly makes antibodies, if invaded. Vaccine introduces antigens to the body stimulating an immune response. When fighting off foreign invaders, our bodies make antibodies specifically produced for the task. A possible therapy for COVID-19 would be the use of monoclonal antibodies specifically engineered to act like coronavirus-fighting immune cells. monoclonal antibodies www.newpathlearning.com © Copyright NewPath Learning.
